FAQ & troubleshooting

Short answers to the things people ask most, the fixes for the problems that come up, and a glossary of DerbyOn words.

General questions #

Is DerbyOn free?

Yes. Recording, racing, the map, your stats and both leaderboards are free. Premium is optional and mainly lifts the limit on how many challenges you can host at once.

Do I need to be fit to use it?

No. Walking is a first-class activity — it's tracked fully, it wins challenges, and it earns XP at a rate that reflects the real effort. Plenty of people never run a step.

Does it work without other people?

Yes. Solo mode records your activity with no challenge and no rivals, and still builds your streak, records, distance and XP. See building a habit on your own.

Which activities are supported?

Walking, running and cycling.

Can I use miles instead of kilometres?

Not currently — DerbyOn is metric throughout, and shows speed as km/h rather than a min/km pace.

Is there a web version?

No. DerbyOn is an iPhone and Android app, because recording needs the GPS in your pocket.

Does it connect to Apple Health, Google Fit or my watch?

No. DerbyOn records with its own GPS tracking and asks for no health data at all.

Can I add friends?

There's no friends list or following in DerbyOn. You connect with people by inviting them to challenges — by link, by code, or by searching their name.

Challenges #

My friend can't join — it says the challenge already started.

Joining closes the moment a challenge goes ACTIVE, so nobody can join mid-race. Start a new challenge and invite them before you tap start.

The invite code isn't working.

Check these in order:

  • The code is 8 characters and never contains 0, O, 1, I or L — if you're reading it off a screenshot, those are the usual misreads.
  • The challenge may have already started, or been cancelled.
  • Make sure you're entering it under Have an invite code? in the Challenges tab.

Can I change a challenge after creating it?

The host can reschedule the start time or cancel it while it's still PENDING. The route, distance and activity are fixed once it's created.

How do I end a challenge nobody is racing any more?

Any participant can tap Vote to End. It finishes once 90% of participants have voted. The host can also cancel a challenge that hasn't started yet.

Why does someone with less distance rank above me?

Finishing beats distance. Anyone who has completed the target distance ranks above everyone still racing, no matter how far they've gone. See how standings are ranked.

How long do I get to finish?

Ready-made routes have a set allowance. Custom routes are paced from the distance — roughly 2 km a day walking, 4 km running, 10 km cycling — between 3 and 60 days. The clock starts when the challenge starts, not when you join.

Recording and distance #

My distance is much lower than it should be.

Almost always the background location permission. Without it, recording stops when your phone locks.

  • iPhone: Settings → DerbyOn → Location → Always.
  • Android: allow location all the time, and exclude DerbyOn from battery optimisation.

See recording with your phone locked.

The app showed a different distance from what was credited.

The live number on your phone is a running estimate. The final figure is confirmed against the whole session afterwards, and only genuine movement for your activity is credited — so it can come out slightly lower. What counts, and what doesn't.

My session says Flagged. Did I lose it?

No. A flag is advisory, not a penalty, and it does not wipe your session — distance is credited segment by segment, so one bad stretch of GPS doesn't destroy the rest. More about flagged sessions.

I recorded a short walk and nothing saved.

Sessions need to run at least 30 seconds, and the first few seconds are discarded while the GPS settles. A very short test won't produce a saved session.

Does it work without mobile data?

Yes. GPS doesn't need a network. DerbyOn keeps recording offline and syncs when you're back online, with the original timestamps.

I recorded against the wrong challenge.

A session can't be moved once it's started. Stop it and start a new one against the right challenge — use the floating button above the tab bar to switch first.

Can I record two things at once?

No, one session at a time. Starting a new one closes any session you left running.

Account and billing #

I never got my verification code.

Check your spam folder, then tap Didn't get a code?Resend code. Codes expire after 10 minutes and allow 5 attempts.

I signed up with Google or Apple and there's no password.

That's expected — there's no password on those accounts. Sign in the same way you did originally. Forgot Password? only applies to email accounts.

How do I cancel Premium?

Through the App Store or Google Play subscription settings, since they handle the billing. Cancelling stops the renewal; you keep Premium until the period you've paid for ends.

I paid but Premium isn't showing.

Tap Restore Purchases on the Premium screen. If it still doesn't appear, email us with the store receipt.

How do I delete my account?

Profile → Delete Account. It's permanent. What gets deleted.

Can I get a copy of my data?

There's no self-service export yet. Email muhshuh2000@gmail.com and we'll help.
